A Ceramic Study in Rural Japan near Mashiko

Is an immersion project in Japanese ceramics and culture, with a special focus on understanding of materials and traditional firing techniques.

From September to December 2026 I am traveling to Mashiko in Japan, here I will explore local materials with the expert guidance of Jackie Iwami.

Through the project, I want to gain greater insight into how I can manipulate the clay as little as possible during the throwning process to preserved its raw and immediate expression.

Iwami has built a wood-fired kiln himself, which we will fire in November. I want to explore and integrate the unpredictable and authentic expression achieved by this firing method into my own work as a ceramicist using an electric kiln.
